A Homier Atmosphere Than Many

A little over a year ago, they opened up a brand new, "mainstream," chain coffee shop near the south end of my current hometown, Fortuna, CA. I've found it handy to go and make purchases there (whenever my *preferred* coffee shop is closed for the night), but I never really feel at home there, despite their roomy outdoor padio area and many available seats inside the store. The interior is admittedly quite nice, stylish and immaculate; but the impersonal nature of the place makes me feel like being elsewhere when I'm in the mood to curl up and enjoy myself while reading a good book.

Not so with Shotz Coffee & Drive-Thru, located on Main Street, just a few blocks east of many other independently-owned (I like to call 'em "Ma & Pa") shops and businesses of Downtown Fortuna!

I began frequenting here because, unlike their southside competitor, Shotz is right on my way going to work. I soon discovered that many of the menu item prices were more affordable than the "mainstreamer's" and one further "bonus" lured me in *for keeps*: Bring in your own coffee mug, and you automatically receive a .35c discount from the cost of any drink you purchase! (The other place gives only a .10c discount.) It does seem to encourage better tipping from the customers, to the delight, doubtless, of the behind-the-counter help; but the customer need never feel like that proverbial vegetable (as in "blood being squeezed from a turnip"), whatwith the affordable prices, the .35c discount, and (among other delicious menu items) the always-tasty coffee drinks and pastries!

In addition, and as is the practice of many other independent coffee shops, a "freebie" drink is given to the customer for every ten purchased; a card is given the customer for keeping track, via stamping, of the amount of drinks he or she has bought until that tenth drink purchase has been made--and, if you're like me, you might sometimes find yourself a little strapped for cash by the time you're ready to take in that eleventh drink, but no worries! It's free! (But, on such occasions, do try to have at least a couple of quarters handy for the tip jar of the friendly and courteous baristas who always promptly attend to their customers' orders and stated needs!)

In a hurry, but nevertheless overcome with an urge to "scratch" that caffeine "itch?" Then the drive-thru will take care of both such concerns! On several occasions, I opted to park the car and just walk on into the store while three vehicles lined up in the drive thru; but, more than once, all three motorists were already served and pulling out before I made it inside! How's THAT for speedy drive-thru service?

Finally, there's the interior and exterior of Shotz. Alas, there isn't really all that much outdoor space on the padio, with only a bench and two chairs at a small, round table. But the inside of the store is decorated with the trappings of old books (feel free to browse!) and what are NOW antique "curiosities"--for example, an old typewriter (what are THOSE?) and other gadgets that aging Baby-Boomers, in the deepest recesses of their memory banks, can recall having once been everyday household items during their youth. Several old, cushioned, living room-style chairs are there to make you feel right at home; there are a couple more tables with chairs; and there's a bartable with several high stools. It's just the place for taking timeout to get into your book, newspaper or laptop!

Whether you feel getting away, for a little while, from all the mundaneness, clamor and squabbling that goes on at the house; or are simply coming in to "get liquid motivation" on your way to "the daily grind;" Shotz just MIGHT be the kind of place you hoped you'd finally find to escape or to get yourself charged-up! In my case, BOTH of these desires were richly gratified.
